Certificate Programs

The following certificate - undergraduate and graduate - are  available as part of the CAEL TAMS program:
 

Computer Support Essentials:  Certificate (15 cr) – Minnesota State Community and Technical College

This major provides the support skills needed to assist computer users in a business environment and to install and administer local and wide area networks. Skill development covers microcomputer and data communications technology, network operating systems, and the related software applications. Hardware skills include selection, configuration, and operation of microcomputer central processing units, peripheral equipment, and data communications equipment. Software skills include software selection, customizing, upgrading, training, and user support. Upon completion of many of the courses the student will be able to take the Microsoft certification course.

Most certificate courses also apply toward the Computer and Network Technology AAS degree offered by the college.

 

Information Security Management:  Certificate (14 cr) – Minnesota West Community and Technical College

Students in the Information Security Management Certificate learn to assess the need for security; examine ethical, legal and professional security issues; assess and control risks; design secure networks; examine disaster recovery plans; educate personnel; and maintain a security program. In addition the students learn about the theory of authentication, encryption, attacks and malicious code; and the components of a secure network, including web servers and remote access. This certificate is designed for the person responsible for the security direction of the organization, including managers, accounting personnel, administrative assistants and computer technical support personnel. This certificate is offered in an online format and can be completed in two semesters.

 

Marketing:  Certificate (16 cr) – Century College

This course of study is designed for students exploring their options within the marketing area. Student will discover the fundamental principle for all marketing; having the right product with the right promotion, at the right price and place. In addition, to a marketing orientation the student will gain skills in working with people in a business setting.

 

Medical Transcriptionist:  Certificate (28 cr) – Minnesota State Community and Technical College

A medical transcriptionist is a medical language specialist who prepares a variety of medical reports and documents for inclusion in patients' medical records. Medical transcriptionists must have a vast knowledge of the medical field and its associated terminology as well as a high degree of computer and written communication skills. Graduates of this program may be eligible to write the national exam for certified medical transcriptionists.  

Microcomputer Office User Specialist:  Certificate (12 cr) – Lake Superior College
This program is designed for the business professional who wishes to be competent with Microsoft Office software applications. Students must be proficient in basic keyboarding skills prior to starting this program. Enrollment notes: Windows Software (CIS1525) is the prerequisite for all other courses for this certificate.

Professional Bookkeeper:  Certificate (30 cr) – Lake Superior College
The Professional Bookkeeper certificate is a one-year program designed to prepare the candidate for a career in the bookkeeping and accounting fields. This program emphasizes the double entry accounting system, federal income taxation, payroll taxation, computerized accounting systems, and other computerized business applications. Upon completion of the certificate, the student should be well prepared to sit for the Certified Bookkeeper exam. This comprehensive examination is administered by the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers. Sitting for this professional exam in highly recommended, but not a requirement of the LSC program.

Supervisory Leadership in Management:  Certificate (23 cr) – Minnesota West Community and Technical College

The Supervisory Leadership in Management certificate program will help the incumbent student prepare for career growth opportunities.  This certificate program will enhance career success through sound leadership skills and management practices.  The Internet platform will allow students to pursue their education without leaving their facility or placing undue hardships on their current positions and/or employment status.  The curriculum will provide for independent practice and virtual role-playing, and the student will be able to interact with college instruction staff via e-mail and discussion groups.

 

Technical Communication:  Undergraduate Certificate (24 cr) – Minnesota State University, Mankato

The undergraduate certificate in Technical Communication prepares students to be professional information developers, technical communicators, and editors who are skilled at using the written and spoken word, along with visuals, to effectively inform and instruct a wide range of audiences. Candidates for the undergraduate certificate in Technical Communication complete a concentration within the English Department. The curriculum focuses on practical, skills-oriented coursework (such as manuals writing, web design, and technical editing). All courses must be in the English department with the exception of courses approved by the technical communication faculty.

Web Development:  Certificate (30 cr) – Minnesota State Community and Technical College

Web Design provides students with the opportunity to use both creative and technical skills. Students in the Web Development program will learn to develop and maintain customer-friendly interactive web sites using the most sophisticated tools currently available. Students will gain a strong understanding, appreciation and practical knowledge of the processes involved in building a successful Web site and e-commerce storefront. The courses in the Web Development Certificate are aligned with the CIW (Certified Internet Webmaster) Master Designer certification.
